There may be one problem however. What happens if you dump a bunch of seashells on your glass scanner bed? In all probability, you'll have to buy a new scanner.
Scanners are, unfortunately, very easy to damage. Scratch the glass, or damage the cover, and there's not a lot you can do. Most scanner manufacturers don't sell replacement components, especially for their lower- and middle-level scanners. You could get somebody to cut a new piece of glass for it and try to replace the glass yourself, but if you don't get it exactly right, or accidentally damage one of the components in the process, you'll have both a busted scanner and a useless piece of glass.
It's actually quite easy to keep your scanner safe and running.
- Protect the glass with acetate. If you're going to scan anything that may scratch or otherwise damage your scanner glass, first cover the glass with a piece of clear acetate (the kind of material they make page protectors with). That should protect your scanner from any but the most problematic materials.
- Remove the cover. If you're scanning something that may damage the inside of the cover (like, for example, those sea shells), it might be a good idea to remove the cover and use a piece of dark cloth to cover your scan bed. That will keep unwanted glare out, but prevent you from harming the scanner itself.
