Reviews of all-in-one printers (also known as multifunctions) that are based around laser print technology. These tend to be faster and more rugged than inkjet-based all-in-ones; they are also more expensive and usually are not as good at printing images. The lower-priced models are black-ink only; others can print in color.

If you're serious about getting a good, solid multifunction device, and want to offer a direct hint to your family, then you might want to drop the name of the Brother MFC-8840DN. PC World gave it an Editor's Pick tag, and PC Magazine was enthusiastic about the number of features it offered and above-par output quality.
