Dye sublimation printers, which use a long roll of transparent film instead of ink to transfer color, offer better and longer lasting prints than photos made with inkjets. However, they are also much more expensive. Most dye sub printers are small (and very portable), and only make up to 4 x 6 photos. On the whole, though, dye subs are wonderful if you want to print out fine, long-lasting photos for family and friends. Here are some of the best.

1) Sony DPP-EX50

Like most dye-sublimation printers, the Sony DPP-EX50 produces top-quality photos, according to all its reviewers. They noted that the best feature is the printer's ability to connect to a TV and display which images to print, and how to print them (for example, in a calendar) -- you can also do some editing, such as applying a fish-eye lens effect. However, the reviewers also complained that, unlike most other photo printers, the DPP-EX50 doesn't include any photo paper in the package.

2) Kodak EasyShare Printer Dock 6000

Kodak has a long history in the photo biz -- but now needs to replace all that film it will no longer be developing. One way is the Kodak EasyShare Printer Dock 6000, a photo printer that allows you to directly dock your camera on top (assuming it's one of a number of Kodak models), and simultaneously download your pictures and charge up your camera. Reviewers agreed: They liked its print quality and convenience, although admitting that its concentration on Kodak devices limited its audience.

3) Canon CP-330

The Canon CP-330 is a truly portable printer: It can run on battery, which is a distinct advantage if you want to use it away from a power source. All reviewers agreed that the print quality is excellent, although the cost of each print is on the high side.

4) HiTi 730PS

The HiTi 730PS may be from a relatively unknown manufacturer, but reviewers were still impressed with the high quality of its output, and its ability to produce prints up to 6 x 8 inches (most of the printers covered here only go up to 4 x 6 inches).

5) Olympus P-10

The two reviews we found of the Olympus P-10 Digital Photo Printer differed widely in several aspects. Both recognized the high speed and convenient design of the printer, making it handy for home photographers who want to bring it to family gatherings. However, the CNET review felt that the print quality was only mediocre, while Steve's Digicams thought the quality was excellent.
