Saving Paper and Pennies

By Peter Piazza, About.com

When they used to talk about the “paperless society,” everybody thought that it would be here by, say, the turn of the century. The idea was that, once a personal computer was in most peoples’ homes, we would no longer have to print things on paper — everything would be on screen. Well, both you and I know that this hasn’t happened — there is as much (or possibly) more stuff printed every day.

However, while we can’t (and don’t necessarily want to) eliminate paper entirely from our desks, we can try to at least cut back. If you’re printing something out just for yourself, and not for somebody else, there are some things you can do that can save a few pages:

  • Use single spacing and smaller-sized lettering (unless, of course, you need them to read comfortably).

  • Indent paragraphs by only three characters. (You’d be surprised how that can shorten a long document).

  • Use wider margins.

  • Use the backs of used paper. (This can include documents that somebody gave to you, as long as the pages weren’t folded or stapled.)

These may seem a bit silly — at the most, you’ll save one or two pages — but when it comes to saving paper (and pennies), every little bit helps.
