What They're Saying About: The Canon Pixma iP8500 Photo Printer

Canon Pixma iP8500

The Canon Pixma iP8500 comes with eight separate ink cartridges.

Canon's latest photo printer gets high marks for speed, color, and print quality; all the reviewers thought that its eight color cartridges did a great job on photos (although one reviewer thought the colors were too vivid, whatever that means). A built-in duplexer plus good text printing makes this also work for general and business use. The only complaint was that the printer doesn't come with media-card slots, which is unusual for a higher-end photo printer.
Price: $349.99
Type: Color inkjet photo printer
Print Speed: Black: 16ppm; Color: 12ppm
Print Resolution: 4800 x 2400 (interpolated)
Special Features: Eight individual cartridges, duplexer (two-sided printing)

CNET Review

Rating: 8 out of 10

Liked: Duplex printing; extended color gamut; easy to operate; relatively fast; Mac compatible.

Disliked: No media-card slots; no network support; colors occasionally too vivid.

In Short: A relatively fast photo printer that produces excellent photo and graphics output.

PC Magazine Review

Rating: 4 out of 5

Liked: Impressively fast, high-quality photos. Separate cartridge for each ink color. Prints directly from PictBridge cameras.

Disliked: No memory card slots. Text/graphics quality and speed are good but not in the same league as photo quality and speed.

In Short: : The Canon Pixma iP8500 Photo Printer is designed for photos. Eight ink colors yield a wide color gamut, and 6,144 nozzles let it print photos at high speed. It's not designed with business applications in mind, but it's still fast enough for use as an all-purpose printer.

Photo-i Review

Rating: N/A

Liked: Excellent photographic print quality. Lots of useful features. Speed. Separate ink tanks. Compact design

Disliked: The PictBridge port can't be used to transfer images to a computer. Colour needs to be sorted out. Black plastic case that reminds me of a cats coffin.

In Short: Using Photoshop I have managed to correct the colours to suit my taste, however, some may like the bolder colours out of the box. The ip8500 features and image quality make this printer stand out from the competition.
