If you're watching the bottom line, but need a good inkjet printer or multifunction, you don't have to compromise. There are a good number of devices out there that can pump out nice-looking text and images for under $100. Here, along with links to reviews, are some excellent printers that won't make you take out a loan.
The Lexmark 4350 all-in-one offers a lot of machine for not much money: it prints out excellent photo prints (although some reviewers felt it was a bit slow), offers slots for memory cards, and a lot of user-friendly options.
If you need the durability and speed of a monochrome laser printer for a reasonable price, you might want to consider the Samsung ML-2010. Reviewers were impressed with the speed and output quality (although at least one complained about the graphics quality).
Dell made headlines when it introduced its new Dell Laser Printer 1100 monochrome laser printer for $99. Built around the same printer engine as the Samsung ML-1610, this is the first laser printer to be available for such an incredibly low price.
The HP PSC 1510 All-in-One is ideal for home offices. It does most of the things a good all-in-one should do: print, copy, and scan. HP has left out a few features in order to keep the price down -- there's no ADF and no independent fax, and you have to swap in a different ink cartridge for photo prints -- but it's still a good deal.
There is a place for low-cost photo printers in the pantheon of today's consumer printers. For example, if you want to get a printer for a youngster or adolescent that will be simple to install and use, will offer good-quality images, and won't set you back too much if it gets broken, this is a good idea. It could also work quite well for households that can't budget too much for a photo printer, but want to produce nice prints to pass around at family gatherings.
