The Problem: What's That Yellow Circle?

By Peter Piazza, About.com

THE PROBLEM:

Sylvia read about Jay's problem, and reports that she had the same difficulty with her HP Deskjet 722C. "After upgrading to Windows XP," she wrote, "my scanner and printer were both not working. After downloading the new driver from HP, the scanner is fine. [Not the printer, though.] In the Windows Device Manager, there's a big yellow circle with an exclamation point in it next to the printer port (LPT 1).

"After upgrading the driver, the only thing that changed was the problem code number; from 29 to 10. And HP refuses to offer any kind of help and it's just about as hard to get any help from Microsoft!!"

WE HAVE A SOLUTION!

Sylvia found a new option on the HP site that let her chat with a tech support person. This is the solution she was given:

"When you start Windows, go to your setup screen-usually F1 or F2. Change the LPT setting from ECP to EPP and change the port setting to 'Enable'."

Sylvia gave it a try. "When I did that, Windows identified my printer immediately on start up. Actually it identified it as HP deskjet 720c and it's a 722c, but that was easily solved by manually choosing the right driver. The wizard installed the driver, I opened up the printers folder and clicked to print a test page and it did, and quickly. This took all of fives minutes!" Congratulations to Sylvia for finding her own solution with a little detective work -- and HP's Web site.
