The Problem: XP Halts An HP

By Peter Piazza, About.com

THE PROBLEM:

Jay has an HP DeskJet 720C, and has just upgraded his PC to Windows XP. Unfortunately he found that his printer no longer works right -- a problem that is caused, or at least complicated, by the fact that Hewlett-Packard no longer posts drivers for the DeskJet 720C on its Web site.

He emailed HP, but never got a reply. So he tried a few alternatives.

"I found the driver using the Windows XP Add Printer wizard," Jay wrote, "and installed. I did a test page, and even did a cleaning, and it seemed to be working. However, when I tried to print a document, it printed up to about 1/3 of page, and stopped. I even tried the driver for the 722C, with the same results.... To see if it affected all applications, I launched Adobe Acrobat, and opened a full page form. It actually printed the whole thing. So, I then tried an Excel version of the same form, with the normal results. I also tried other Word documents, with the same results. So, I did the PDF form again, and it back to printing 1/4 to 1/3 of the page."
