Review: Canon i80 Photo Printer

Good Software Selections

Canon has always included excellent software apps with its digital photography products, and the i80 is no exception. There are several useful (and fun) products you can install:
  • PhotoRecord creates simple albums of photos, including "pages," captions, and other enhancements, that can then be printed out.
  • ZoomBrowser EX is an impressive tool that lets you import, organize, print and export images. It's a very nicely arranged applet that includes basic editing capabilities for such things as contrast and brightness, three viewing modes (thumbnails only, larger thumbnails, or preview, which lets you click through reasonably-sized views of your images), create a slide show, lets you quickly change the file name and add comments, and offers more serious photographers information such as shutter speed and image size. My only regret is that it didn't come with my HP camera.
  • Easy Photo Print Plus lets you quickly correct red-eye and eliminate glare on faces before printing your photos, either one or in a group. For some reason, the i80's disk installs both this and the basic version, which doesn't include the red-eye and smoothing features.

Other applets include PhotoStitch, which lets you combine photos.

Getting Help

Canon i80 ZoomBrowser EX
ZooomBrowser EX is an efficient way to view and organize your photos.

Canon offers free phone technical support for its printers at a toll number on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. - midnight ET, and Saturday noon - 8:00 p.m. (excluding holidays). I called with a question about problems printing with Microsoft Digital Image Pro, and was immediately connected to a courteous and friendly tech support person who was quite willing to help on any problems with the printer and the software it came with, but told me that problems with other software packages had to be taken up with the software vendor. There is also e-mail support available, and a useful, but somewhat support on the Web site.

If you're looking for a mobile photo printer, you can't do much better than this. The i80 is small and light enough for anyone to handle, and it sets up quickly. Print quality is excellent on photo paper, and you can print directly from your digital camera (although it would be nice if the printer took memory media). At $249.99, this is not an inexpensive unit, but if you need to print out quality photos away from your desktop, this is an ideal printer for the task.
