When should a home user buy a laser printer?

By Peter Piazza, About.com

Question: When should a home user buy a laser printer?

Answer: Once upon a time, laser printers were the only way to go if you wanted professional-looking text. You wanted to send the occasional letter to Aunt Ethel? You printed out your child's latest story for school? An inkjet printer was fine. You needed to send letters to your most important clients? That was a job for a laser printer.

Over the last couple of years, however, the quality of inkjet printing has risen to the point where most inkjet printers will produce text and graphics that are quite suitable for business documents. In fact, if you want to include color charts or other illustrations, a color inkjet is the only option.

However, there are still times when a laser printer is preferable. If color is not important, but speed is, then you definitely want a laser -- laser printers will pump out pages at a much faster speed than an inkjet printer. In addition, laser printers are more rugged, so that if your business demands a great deal of paperwork, a laser printer will take the abuse. Finally, a laser printer is more likely to have add-ons that make them more suitable for business uses, such as additional paper trays or even the ability to automatically print on both sides of the sheet.
