We've added a new review to our small, but growing, list: the Epson Stylus CX5400, an all-in-one that offers a lot of value for a very reasonable price. Jim Freund gives his impressions of this handy desktop unit here.

Ink Anger

Just read a very interesting article over at PC World's Web site called Irate Over Ink. It discusses the rumors that some printers force users to replace ink cartridges well before they actually run out of ink. According to the article the rumors are true -- in some cases. Interesting piece.

When Small Businesses Buy Big

It's hard enough for most of us to figure out which printer or scanner we want to buy for our homes or home offices. When you're dealing with a large, floor-standing multifunction unit for a business, things can get really dicey. I've just finished the first that I hope will be part of a series of articles dealing with larger printer/scanner/copiers for those who may be looking at a bigger unit for the first time. First on the list? How to figure out how much you're actually paying -- which isn't as simple as it sounds. If you're interested, try out When Small Businesses Buy Big: The Pricing Game.

Camera Companies Look at Printers

PC Magazine's ExtremeTech site just published an interesting article on how camera makers -- all of whom have switched or are switching to digital photography -- are now looking to the printer market to regain some of the market share they lost. People no longer need to have their photos developed -- apparently about 80 percent of photos are now printed at home. As a result, companies such as Eastman Kodak, Fuji, and Olympus are looking into the possibility of selling photo printers for home use. You can find the article right here.

Scanning Family Photos

A reader sent me an e-mail recently asking advice on buying a scanner in order to archive his old family photographs. I consulted a photopher friend of mine, and the result was a new article: Saving Your Family Photos. It offers advice on what you should know before you buy a scanner and start scanning all those old snapshots.

New Canon Photo Printers

The Photo Marketing Show is in Las Vegas this week, and Canon has already announced three new photo printers. The Canon i9900 is an eight-color (red, green, cyan, magenta, yellow, black, photo cyan, and photo magenta) photo printer that can print photos up to 13 by 19 inches, with a maximum resolution of 4800 by 2400 dots per inch. The $499.99 printer won't be on the shelves until May, 2004. For photographers on the go, Canon's i80 mobile printer can handle edge-to-edge borderless printing in 4x6, 5x7, and 8.5x11 inch sizes, with resolutions up to 4800x1200dpi. The device is scheduled to ship in mid-February for $249.99; if you're willing to pay a bit more, you can add a power unit that plugs into a car cigarette lighter, or a lithium ion battery. Finally, for companies that need wide-format printing, Canon's ImagePrograf W6200 prints images up to 24x60 feet. This high-end printer is scheduled to ship in February for $3,495.

Networking With Brother

Brother's latest network workgroup laser printer is the HL-8050N, which offers print speed up to 35ppm and 1200x1200dpi resolution. If you plan to do a lot of printing, you can add two 550-sheet paper trays to the existing 700-sheet tray, making a respectable total of 1,800 sheets. You can also add a duplex unit so you can have simple two-sided printing. For more information about the HL-8050N (which starts at $1,099.99), you can go here.

Pricing Printers

How much printer can you get for your money? I've added a new article that offers some advice on how much you can expect to spend -- depending on what kind of printer you need. You can find it here.
