Xerox Adds New Printers

Xerox is known more for its corporate, large-scale, take-no-prisoners printers and copiers than for small-business desktop devices. However, in the last year or so, the company has been introducing more systems for small business customers. On February 29, 2004, Xerox announced the Phaser 8400, a 24ppm color laser printer that uses solid ink technology (which is just what it sounds like -- color is produced by melting ink "crayons" onto the page rather than attaching powdered toner). The device includes a 500MHz processor, handles up to legal (8.5 x 14-inch) paper, duplex printing, and 600x600dpi resolution (2400 interpolated). The Phaser 8400 will start at $999 (other configurations offer additional features such as networking and additional paper trays); click here for more information.

Lexmark's Latest

Lexmark has introduced a new 20ppm color laser printer line for small- and medium-sized businesses. The Lexmark C752L series includes 1200x1200dpi resolution and a feature called "proof then print" which has user print first in monochrome to make sure the copy is useable, thus saving on color toner. The printers include the C752Ln (the networkable version), the C752Ldn (which adds an automatic duplexer), and the C752Ldtn (which includes the previous two features plus an additional 500-sheet drawer). Further descriptions and prices (the C752Ldtn, for example, lists at $3,019) can be found at Lexmark's Web site.

It's a TV! It's a Printer!

Epson, not behind anybody in its effort to combine several functions in one device, has announced two Epson Livingstation HDTV LCD projection televisions – the EPSON Livingstation LS47P1 and EPSON Livingstation LS57P1. These widescreen HD TV screens also include what Epson calls its "Photo On Demand" technology -- in other words, you can drop in your memory card, view your family photos on a big screen, and then print them out as 4x6-inch prints using the included dye sublimation printer. If you'd rather have a photo of your favorite TV star, you can freeze any image and print that out too. The possibilities are endless.... According to Epson, the two systems (one a 47-inch screen and the other a 47-inch screen) will ship in March 2004 with estimated retail prices of $3,499 and $3,999, respectively. More information is available here.

Brother's Latest Small Office Laser

Brother is introducing its first under-$1,000 color laser printer for small businesses: the HL-2700CN. The relatively small desktop printer runs up to 31ppm in monochrome and 8ppm in color (not an unusual gap when dealing with small color lasers). A 250-page letter-sized paper tray and 64MB of memory are standard. Color laser printers in this class are not useful if you're going to be doing a lot of professional color jobs, but if you're a home or small business who needs very high quality printing with an occasional color touch-up, you may want to check this one out at Brother's Web site. It is due to ship sometimes in January 2204

Happy New Year!

Just wanted to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year, and welcome them to the (relatively) new Printers and Scanners site here at About.com. I recently got an email from a reader who appreciated the article on Dealing With Tech Support, but added that sometimes even going to a support rep's supervisor doesn't work. I fully sympathize -- as must anyone who's ever dealt with a faulty printer or problematic scanner. I hope that sometime soon, I'll be starting a forum here where you can bring suggestions and questions about buying, using, and fixing your printers and scanners. Meanwhile, please don't hesitate to email me to let me know your opinions, preferences, and questions.
