How Tech Do You Want To Get?

Wednesday October 4, 2006
Today, I was sitting in on a vendor meeting and they were showing me their new printhead, based on a totally new technology. I found it fascinating -- the difference between the two technologies, and the difference it would make in how the printer operated. And I started wondering whether it was just me who found it fascinating, or whether the inner workings of a printer, and a scanner, might be interesting to you as well.

What do you think? Would you like some exploration of the inner workings of printers and scanners (in the same way that automotive magazines might look into exactly how an automatic transmission works)? Or are you more interested in which printer to buy, and what to do about buying ink? Let me know...

I’m totally confused as to what all in one inkjet printer, scanner, coppier to buy. I want something that is reasonably priced, the ink is reasonably priced and the printheads will last for about 10 years. I was told that the printheads should last btn 7-10 years & so should an all-in-one printer. Is this true. I was told that HP ink is more reasonable without lessening quality and that other brands’ ink cartages tend to dry out too quickly. Please inform me. I am primarily needing text black & white, but will also need colour. Student quality prints and good scanning to disc to be printed off to maybe as large as 8×10. Please give me direction and why. Thank you please help

Fern — First of all, whether a printer lasts for five, ten, or 20 years depends not only on the durability of the printer, but on how often you use it, how you maintain it, etc. The print heads will last as long as the machine does, as long as they are kept clean — remember, they don’t contact the paper, they just squirt ink, so they won’t wear out. And unless you plan to use your printer once every couple of months or so. A good basic all-in-one should do fine — check the Printer/Scanner Reviews on this site.
