Canon Announces 2 New Photo Printers
It looks as though nearly all of the printer manufacturers are making new device announcements, probably as a prelude to the holiday gift-giving season. Now it's Canon's turn: The company has announced two new photo printers: the Selphy ES1 Compact Photo Printer ($250), a rather strange looking little printer that is tall rather than wide and which produces postcard-sized photos. According to Canon, the printer offers the ink and paper together in one cassette, which "eliminates the need for a separate paper tray and allows for fast and easy ink/paper replacement." (It also makes sure that you have to buy supplies from Canon.) The Selphy ES1 will be available in October.
On the other hand, the PIXMA MP960 Photo All-In-One ($400) is available now. It’s a high-quality seven-color inkjet device (actually, six colors and black ink for text printing) at up to 9600 x 2400 pixel resolution. It also offers 4800 dpi color scanning and an LCD screen for viewing and editing photos (however, if you need fax, look elsewhere). Could be excellent for photo enthusiasts who also need scanning capabilities.
