Really Empty Ink Cartridges

Wednesday April 19, 2006
Okay, here's a good one. There is apparently a free utility out there that lets you fool your Epson printer's internal ink counters into thinking your cartridges are full again. Why do you need to do this? Because Epson printers usually report their cartridges as empty even when they're not, so that you have a "safety reserve" of ink. (Epson actually lost a court case over this one recently.)

If you plan to check this one out, though, keep in mind that I haven't tried this (nor, as far as I'm aware, anyone I know), so if you do plan to try it, take the usual precautions first. Check the file with your virus checker before you install it, and create a Windows Restore point so that you can fix things should they go wrong.

In addition, keep in mind that if you do let your ink cartridges run dry, you could indeed damage your print heads -- and that would cost a lot more than a new cartridge.

How to use your ink cartridges until they're (really) empty
