Whither Photo Scanners?
Thursday July 14, 2005
I was talking to a representative from a popular printer/scanner manufacturer and questioned him about how long photo scanners -- individual scanners, as opposed to all-in-ones -- would still be viable for manufacturers to produce. Most consumers use photos scanners to conserve old photos and films, since digital photography has pretty much taken over family photography. At some point -- say, 50 years from now -- most, if not all, of those old, yellowing photos will be either digitized or lost, and the market for consumer photo scanners will have gone away.
The rep agreed, but added that, since kids are still using a lot of disposable (35mm) cameras, photo scanners aren't going away in the near future, anyway.
